Phase III – Satellite Connectivity and Disaster Resilience (2025–2027)
An Internet Society Foundation Research Project (2021–2027)
When natural disasters strike, communication networks are often the first critical infrastructure to fail. Increasingly, Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite systems are stepping in to provide resilient connectivity when communities need it most.
We are delighted to invite you to a special Internet Society UK Chapter webinar exploring the latest phase of a major international research initiative examining the future of satellite-enabled connectivity and Internet governance.
Webinar
Phase III – Satellite Connectivity and Disaster Resilience (2025–2027)
Date and Time
Monday 9 November 2026
17:00 GMT (UK Time)
Speakers
- Professor Joanna Kulesza, University of Łódź, Poland
- Dr Berna Akcali Gur, Queen Mary University of London, UK

The webinar will present the findings and ongoing work of the third phase of the internationally recognised research project, Decolonizing the Internet: Global Governance of Low Earth Orbit Satellite Broadband, supported by the Internet Society Foundation. The current phase focuses on the growing role of satellite connectivity in disaster response and humanitarian relief, examining how governments, international organisations, civil society and industry can work together to ensure resilient connectivity during emergencies.
Recent disasters around the world have demonstrated both the enormous potential of satellite communications and the policy, legal and governance challenges that accompany their deployment. The project explores how satellite connectivity can be integrated into disaster risk reduction frameworks and how emerging international approaches are increasingly recognising connectivity as a critical necessity during humanitarian crises.
Whether you are interested in Internet governance, telecommunications policy, digital rights, resilience, cybersecurity, humanitarian response, or the future of global connectivity, this session will provide unique insights from two of the leading researchers in this field.
